It has been proposed that she may have been connected to the family of Giles and Mary (Arnold) Sylvester, two of whose sons, Nathaniel and Constant, were among the original purchasers of Shelter Island, New York.

Mary is the daughter of Joshua Sylvester and Mary Arnold. Mary Sylvester was christened on 25 January 1628 in East Meon, Hampshire, England.
